Cam's report - Day 16 & 17

September 7, 2009
As this was the coolest city I've been to by far, and also due to the slight hamstring pull (well not so slight) I decided to take a couple of days rest in Bayanoer. These 2 days were spent doing some very relaxed chilling, exploring the city, eating ridiculous amounts (mainly big chunks of roast lamb) and fixing the old bike. A call was also made to the taxi driver whom showed me around and took me some good places to eat.

Cam's report - Day 15

August 28, 2009
Early up and go, I'm on the road at 7am. It's 100km to the next city and arrive there at lunch time after some early pace setting.

What a great little city... on arriving and not knowing where to go except the name of the street to go to find hotels etc (thanks must go Matty bugger, for his research and explanatory sms) I venture to ask a taxi driver chilling and chatting on his phone. The great guy proceeded to show me the way by driving next to me the whole way to the hotel street and then ...

Cam's report - Day 14

August 28, 2009
Awesome day, finally... Set off at a furious pace to try catch up on lost ground. Terrain is slowly but surely becoming a lot more dessertlike, rolling green hills changing into brown, dustier landscapes. Today's stretch is long and flat with a striking mountain range on the northern side of the road. Leaving Baotou behind there are far less cars and trucks on the road. Sometimes riding down the centre of the road for miles, where did all the people go?

Cam's report - Day 13

August 28, 2009
Weather is far worse today, as I plunge into the torrential rain. It's just not as much fun anymore so I stop at a random garage to get shelter. End up chilling there for 4 hours chatting a worker there. Get some sweet free food. Learn how to play majong. Rain still not abbetting so find the closest hotel and call it a day. Get freaked out by the locals (all truck drivers) as they try to forcefeed me bai jiu (chinese liquor, hellova strong)

Cam's report - Day 11

August 28, 2009
It's pouring the rain, and roads are flooded. Make steady progress, but eventually call it a night as I look like a monster covered head to toe in mud. Find the most basic of hotels. Am surprised to see I'm still in Baotou. Read up on this and apparently its the biggest city in Inner Mongolia, very industrialized. Pray for better weather the next day.

Cam's report - Day 10

August 28, 2009
Feels good to be back on the bike. Today have made an ambitious target to get to the next big city, Baotou. 150km. Morning session not so good into the head wind. Stop for lunch and end up getting a free meal. The chinese are naturally curious and when, of all things, a foreigner rocks up bike fully laden and looking like he's been stranded in a desert for months, fascination leads to many questions being asked and quite frequently to a free meal. On my way again it finally starts getting dar...

Cam's report - Day 9

August 28, 2009
A rest day at last! However, after waking up I feel a slight irritation in the gut area... A couple of hours later it turns into a crippling stomach ailment and I spend the day, until about 2:30pm, in bed. Suddenly I realise that between my mother and better half I have enough medicine packed into my bags to feed the Peoples Liberation Army.

Sifting through each item, and there is alot of sifting, I come across the answer. 'Gastro....' something or other. Within 30 min I'm out of the hotel an...

Cam's report - Day 8

August 25, 2009
Make up camp super quick and am off by 7:30. The headwind is a bad sign as I'im wanting to put in a few more kms today. Scenery has changed to a more barren and desolate landscape, just as awesome tho. The sky is blue, fantastic!

Arrive in an surprisingly developed little town (surprising as its not even mentioned on the map) and draw some money which am in dire need of. Eating lunch, I manage to get the resident 5 year old to do the pointing fingers dance, which is, by those of you whom have...

Cam's report - Day 7

August 25, 2009

More headwind today (which is apparrently the prevailing wind that blows in these parts).

More rolling green landscapes, I eventually stop into into roadside truck stop restaurant. Dont bother ordering from the menu, walk into the kitchen and point to everything I want to be fried up. Get some porky green peppers and celery. Mmmmm, it comes out pretty good. Have conversation with a very drunk man who kindly gave me direction all the way to Xinjiang Province (later i saw him get into a police ...
